EDF has signed a landmark cooperation agreement with Fukui Prefecture, Japan’s leading region for nuclear energy, marking a significant step forward in international collaboration on nuclear decommissioning and waste management.

The signing ceremony took place in Tsuruga City, with Vice Governor Yasuhiro Nakamura and Sylvain Granger, Director of Deconstruction and Waste at Groupe EDF and Executive President of Cyclife, representing the two parties. The agreement establishes a non-commercial framework for technical exchange and joint activities, with a particular focus on metal recycling and clearance. It also supports the Reinan East Coast initiative, an ambitious regional revitalisation effort combining environmental responsibility and technical innovation.

Through its Cyclife subsidiaries, EDF brings extensive experience of operating advanced metal treatment facilities in France, the UK, and Sweden. This partnership will enable both parties to share best practices and explore new approaches to radioactive waste management.

Sylvain Granger, Director of Deconstruction and Waste at Groupe EDF and Executive President of Cyclife, comments:

"Thanks to its expertise in metal recovery, EDF - through is subsidiary Cyclife - has been demonstrating for 40 years the value of a waste management model based on the circular economy of recoverable materials for both waste producers and foundries, whose high-quality metals are in strong demand."

Patrick Dupeyrat (Cyclife Japan) and Shunji Kobayashi (Fukui Prefecture) will lead the cooperation. A Steering Committee will meet annually to guide the collaboration, review progress, and identify new opportunities. The agreement also paves the way for future business contracts for specific technical support, to be delivered by Cyclife.

This cooperation partnership on nuclear decommissioning strengthens EDF’s presence in Japan via Cyclife and highlights the value of international cooperation in building a safer, more sustainable future for nuclear energy.
